Clutter to Compost
Delta Directions Consortium

Description Sister Kay Burton's DuRocher Service Development Program applied for this grant to run a service learning project as part of her "Girls to Women" mentoring program for high school-age girls. The Delta Directions Consortium assisted in the grant application writing as part of its "Local Grant Assistance Initiative."
As part of this project, Girls to Women purchased a truck and a wood chipper so the girls can collect old leaves and tree limbs from residents, chip them, turn them into compost, and then bag and sell the compost to community members, while simultaneously implementing an educational campaign about how to improve the environment and the benefits of using compost. This program will be sustainable after a capital infusion for the equipment purchase because sale of the compost bags would cover the cost of gasoline and equipment repairs for the following cycle.
